External Floating Roof Sealing

External floating roof sealing systems close the annular space between the floating roof and tank shell to reduce vapour emissions. Our solutions include primary and secondary seals, with different seal types and materials selected according to tank condition, rim space and stored product.

Primary Seal for External Floating Roof

The full range of seal types, so the seal can be matched precisely to tank condition, rim space and product.

The primary rim seal of an external floating roof tank. Mounted on the outer rim of the floating roof, it closes the annular space between the roof edge and the tank shell and acts as the first barrier against vapour escape. Types supplied include liquid-mounted foam, mechanical shoe (pantograph or counterweight) and liquid-filled tube seals, selected according to tank condition, rim space and stored product.

Advantage:
1. Full range of seal types offered, so the seal can be matched precisely to tank condition, rim space and product.
2. Liquid-mounted foam and liquid-filled tube seals keep the vapour zone to a minimum for the best emission control.
3. Mechanical shoe versions tolerate wide rim-space variation, shell out-of-roundness and riveted tank construction.
4. Seals are designed for +/-100 mm rim-gap deviation so the roof never jams during operation.
5. Materials compatible with crude and the full range of refined products, including 100%-aromatic service.
6. Complies with API 650 and current VOC-emission regulations.

Secondary Seal for External Floating Roof

Cuts rim emissions by up to a further 90% and shields the primary seal from rain and UV.

A secondary seal mounted on the floating roof rim above the primary seal of an external floating roof tank, covering the entire annular space between the top of the primary seal and the roof rim. Compression-plate (metallic) and elastomeric wiper types are available. The secondary seal captures any vapour escaping past the primary seal and shields the primary seal from rain and UV radiation.

Advantage:
1. Reduces rim vapour emissions by up to 90% compared with a primary seal alone.
2. Protects the primary seal from rain, snow and UV, extending its service life significantly.
3. Metallic compression-plate versions give continuous, abrasion-resistant contact and can achieve gas-tight performance.
4. Flexible wiper versions cope with roof tilt and rim-space variation.
5. Supplied with certified vapour-barrier fabrics suitable for 100%-aromatic service.
6. Designed to API 650; required by most current VOC regulations for external floating roof tanks.
